More marker ad comps

Here are a few ad comps that were part of a series that I rendered for one of my New York clients. They were all 9 x 11" and done using markers on layout paper.


I did the lettering on the computer and pasted it into my layout.


The same method was used on this rendering.


Another marker rendering and the lettering in this case was painted on with a brush.


I also had to do the lettering in different languages as these ads would also be used in foreign markets.

Marker ad comps

As well as storyboard assignments ad agencies would have me render marker comps for magazine ad campaigns. Often there would be several ads to do and the deadlines could be brutal. Ad comps had to be rendered tighter and larger than the storyboard frames.


This illustration was one of a series of ad comps done for one of my Chicago clients. It was done using markers on layout paper and the background was softened by using an airbrush with Windsor and Newton Designer's Colors.



Here is another single page ad comp illustration and below is a double spread version that I also had to render. This was also part of a series of several ads done for a New York ad agency. Often these assignments would come in late Friday with a Monday morning deadline. Both of these illustrations were rendered using markers on high quality layout paper. Some of the highlights and details were added using a brush and paint.

Rabbits and ants

Over the years of doing storyboards I would frequently receive some pretty weird scripts. How they planned to shot this one I'll never know. Perhaps this would have been animated in the final version.


The background is somewhere in Monument Valley in Utah.


More rabbits keep coming. I'm not quite sure why they wanted the large white area, perhaps they were going to add some copy there.


Hundreds of rabbits now appear in the frame, they just keep coming.


These frames were done 4 x5 " on high quality layout paper. Above is my sketch for the backgrounds.


This was one of those super RUSH jobs, I hardly had time to do tight underlay sketches.


My sketches were extremely loose because of the time restrictions. These were done for one of my New York clients, possibly Y & R.




Another strange concept depicting ants at work. I only found these two frames, I know that I rendered several more. These frames were done in the 5 x 7" size.

Back to Winter in Michigan

Here's Gloria all dressed up and ready to go out on the town. There are a lot of great restaurants in Puerto Vallarta and we enjoy them all.


One day it was actually kind of cold, here's Gloria shivering at breakfast.

Back from Mexico !

Gloria and I are back after ten enjoyable days in beautiful Puerto Vallarta. Above Gloria is sipping a Mango Daquirie at the River Cafe, our favorite restaurant in PV.


I had LOTS of mail when I got back. I still don't have my computers repaired but should be able to post on a limited basis. I hope to get to the Mac Store in the next few days.

Having computer problems

I'm having a few problems with my computers, Firefox keeps crashing as well as my scanner. When I get a chance I'll be off to the Mac Store, could be a couple of weeks before I get this straightened out.

Storyboard frames for ING

Another rush storyboard assignment, I don't recall the ad agency or art director. It was done for one of my New York clients and is pretty representative of the fast, loose style that I employed for most of my storyboard assignments. I enjoy working in this technique as the work looks fresh and loose, not overworked, a great style for overnight assignments. Magazine ad comps usually had to be rendered much tighter, I'll try to find some examples and post them at a later date.













These renderings were all done in the 4 x 5" size and rendered with markers on high quality layout paper.
