Remembering an old friend

Don Silverstein was a great artist and long time friend. I worked with him when he started at Allied Artists in Detroit sometime around 1948. Don was a wildman and did some terrific artwork. He eventually worked in London, New York City and even spent 10 years in Tokyo. His wife, Sakiko, has just published a book"Don Silverstein", showing his amazing work, it's available at Amazon.com.

Digital sketches for a painting

For my recent series of acrylic paintings I have done my preliminary color sketches on the computer. Below are some of the interesting color variations that I developed on the computer in a short time, something that would be very time consuming if done using traditional mediums. My first sketch done using Photoshop Elements 3.0 on a Mac computer. This is a negative version of the same image. Another color variation. Having fun with color. Still another variation. On this version I changed the proportions of the first sketch to see what that would look like. The finished acrylic painting done on canvas.

10 Years with Gloria

I met Gloria on the internet 10 years ago and we've been dating ever since, she's a great, fun gal, I'm really happy to have found her, well, she actually found me on Yahoo Personals. She lives 100 miles away in Grand Rapids, so we haven't been able to get together much recently with all the snow, but Spring will come soon. We usually go to Puerto Vallarta, but can't manage that this year.

New Watch

I bought myself a crazy new watch for Xmas. It has two watch faces, a thermometer and a compass, I think it looks great. Got it from Wish.com.

Book cover idea

Lately I've been thinking about doing another book, possibly one showing a lot of my advertising illustrations and design work. I've saved a lot of examples over the years. It probably will be almost impossible to interest a publisher.

When I was a kid I always wanted to send in a sketch like that, but never did.

Interesting new book

Don Silverstein was a great artist and very funny cartoonist who I worked with in Detroit. He unfortunately passed away about 10 years ago. His wife, Sakiko, put together a great book full of a lot of his artwork and it's available on Amazon.com. Don started working at an early age in Detroit with Cliff Roberts and I at Allied Artists. We did a lot of work for Ford Times Magazine. He later moved to London, New York and even lived and worked in Tokyo for ten years. Don was a pretty wild character as you can see in the above photo. He was very zany and always full of surprises.
