Frazetta: Some works by the master

It was a very sad day to learn of the passing of one of the greats in illustration and art. Frank Frazetta has always been one of my favorite artists as he's created some remarkable art in his career. I dug up some old files to have another look at Frank's work and thought I'd share a few pieces with you.



Ink line drawings were one of Frazetta's specialties.






I think that this is a very beautiful piece, seems a bit out of place on the cover of a comic book.

A legend died today

Frank Frazetta, one of my all time favorite artists, died today. Frank did some amazing art for paperback book covers over the years. Goodbye Frank, you were a superstar, one in a million.

Additional storyboard frames for eToys

Here are the rest of the frames that are part of the previous group, totaling 24 frames. This assignment has more frames than normal, most storyboards consist of 7 or 12 frames. These were done under the usual tight deadline and I did not have the time to render them in color.












These drawings are a bit tighter than I normally would do for my underlay drawings when rendering in color. The gray tones were added to clarify the images.
Storyboarding is a constant battle against time, a battle that one must win to stay in business. After awhile you get used to working under tremendous pressure.

Frequently, because of very tight deadlines, the ad agencies would ask me to draw the storyboards in pencil line and tone rather than do full color marker renderings. Often, even doing just pencil sketches, I would barely make the deadline, this particular board was a tough one, having 24 frames. Here I am posting the first 12 frames, the rest will be shown on the next post.

Rich man's disease

Yup, even though I'm not rich, I just went through a two week bout with the so called "rich man's disease", gout, BOTH feet, at that. This happens about every four or five years, but usually only lasts two or three days and normally only in one foot. My first encounter with gout occurred while living in Paris, perhaps too much wine and rich food. My dad had it had it pretty bad, it must be hereditary. It's VERY painful, I don't wish this on anyone !


Anyway, Gloria was kind enough to come down from Grand Rapids and baby me. She made meals, forced pills down me and drove around to pick up my mail and did a little shopping. However, she refused to buy a little nurse's outfit from Frederick's that I recommended she wear.
I'm trying to dig up more ad comp and storyboard material to post, as I am running out of stuff. If I can't locate more work, I'll probably post a few demonstrations and more of my new paintings.

Storyboards for Mobil Oil

More Fast storyboards, it seems that all of my storyboard and ad comp assignments had pretty tough deadlines. I had a reputation for meeting deadlines with quality renderings and when Art Directors that were familiar with my work needed something overnight they would call me. Of course, all artists in this field MUST develop a fast, competent rendering style or they are out of business. I know that there are many artists who render frames on the computer, I've tried it a few times, but it always took me much longer than rendering with markers. Often, with markers I would work on several frames at the same time, for instance, rendering all of the sky areas or cars at the same time. I probably could have eventually developed a computer style that could have worked, however.

Fast storyboards for Draft

Sometimes the deadlines on storyboards are SO ridiculous that you have no time at all. Here are some fast, almost cartoon-like pencil sketches for Burger King. There was quite a few of them, if I remember correctly, and I drew them about 3 x 4" and delivered them over the internet.






Tough going, but the client was happy, and the frames got the ideas across.
